There’s something incredibly rewarding about crafting your own skincare with pure, nourishing ingredients. This whipped tallow body butter is deeply hydrating, packed with skin-loving nutrients, and infused with the healing properties of rosebuds and calendula. It’s perfect for dry, sensitive, or irritated skin, combining the benefits of herbal-infused jojoba oil and grass-fed, grass-finished beef tallow for a luxurious, all-natural moisturizer.
Why Use Tallow for Skincare?
Grass-fed, grass-finished beef tallow is one of the most nutrient-dense moisturizers, loaded with:
Vitamins A, D, E, and K: Essential for skin repair and hydration.
Omega fatty acids: Mimic our skin’s natural oils, making it highly absorbable.
Collagen-boosting properties: Helps improve skin elasticity and texture.
Understanding Grass-Fed vs. Grass-Finished Tallow
Not all grass-fed tallow is created equal. The grass-fed label can be misleading. Cattle only needs to be fed grass for the last 30 days of their life to qualify for this label. However, grass-fed & grass-finished means the animal was raised on a 100% grass diet for its entire life, resulting in a higher-quality, more nutrient-dense tallow.
Where to Source High-Quality Tallow:
Local farms & butchers: Look for regenerative farms that practice ethical, grass-finished cattle raising.
Online retailers: Trusted sources like White Oak Pastures, US Wellness Meats, or Amish and regenerative farms often provide high-quality, grass-finished tallow.
DIY rendering: If you have access to raw suet (beef fat), you can render your own tallow at home.
Ingredients:
1 cup dried rosebuds (hydrating and anti-inflammatory)
1 cup dried calendula flowers (calming and antibacterial)
7 oz jojoba oil (light, non-greasy, and deeply nourishing)
7 cups grass-fed & grass-finished beef tallow (skin-healing and vitamin-rich)
10 drops frankincense essential oil (skin-rejuvenating and anti-aging)
8 drops rosemary essential oil (antioxidant-rich and stimulates circulation)
8 drops tea tree essential oil (antibacterial and clarifying)
Instructions:
Crush the dried herbs with a mortar and pestle to release their natural oils and increase their extraction surface area.
Combine them with jojoba oil in a heatproof bowl.
Use a double boiler (or place the bowl over a pot of simmering water) and heat on low for 2 hours, stirring occasionally. This allows the jojoba oil to extract all the beneficial herbal compounds.
Thirty minutes before the infusion is done, melt the beef tallow in a separate pot over low heat. Once fully liquefied, turn off the heat.
After the full 2-hour infusion, remove the bowl from heat.
Strain the oil through a cheesecloth into a clean bowl, squeezing out every last drop.
Pour the melted tallow into a clean bowl.
Add the infused herbal oil and mix well.
Stir in essential oils for added skin benefits and a therapeutic aroma.
Place the mixture in the fridge overnight to solidify.
The next day, use an electric mixer (or a stand mixer with a whisk attachment) to whip the tallow mixture until it becomes light and fluffy.
Pipe into jars or containers and store in a cool, dark place.
How to Use:
Apply a small amount to clean, dry skin, especially on areas prone to dryness.
Use it as a nighttime moisturizer, body butter, or even a baby balm.
A little goes a long way.
