Honey Garlic: My Go-To Natural Remedy for Cold and Flu Season
As the crisp air of fall settles in, one of my favorite traditions is preparing my homemade garlic honey. This delightful concoction not only tastes amazing but also serves as a powerful natural remedy to bolster the immune system during the cold and flu season. There’s something truly comforting about having this potent blend on hand, and I love knowing that I’m nurturing my health with simple, wholesome ingredients.
Why I Love Garlic Honey
Garlic and honey have been celebrated for their health benefits for centuries. Garlic is packed with allicin, known for its antimicrobial and immune-boosting properties. Honey, especially raw honey, is rich in antioxidants and has natural soothing qualities. Together, they create a powerful duo that supports overall well-being, and I can’t imagine going through the winter months without it.
How I Make My Garlic Honey
Making garlic honey is incredibly easy! Here’s how I do it:
Ingredients:
4-6 cloves of fresh garlic
1 cup of raw, unfiltered honey (preferably local)
Instructions:
Prepare the Garlic: I start by peeling the garlic cloves and giving them a good crush (it does not need to be minced just give it one good crush to break open the clove a bit). This step is key because it activates the beneficial compounds (allicin) in garlic, releasing all those wonderful properties.
Combine Ingredients: In a clean glass jar, I layer the crushed garlic cloves with the raw honey. I ensure the garlic is fully submerged in honey, as this allows the flavors and nutrients to infuse beautifully.
Infuse the Mixture: I let the jar sit at room temperature in a cool, dark place for about 4 weeks. While you can start using it after a few days, waiting the full four weeks will give it a more potent flavor. During this time, the honey absorbs the essence of the garlic, turning into a sweet and savory elixir. For the first week, open and close the jar daily to “burp” it. Over time, the garlic will soften, making it perfect for eating directly or adding to various dishes.
Store the Mixture: After the 4 weeks, I give the jar a good stir and then store it in the refrigerator. It can last for months, but it rarely lasts that long in my house!
How I Use Garlic Honey
I enjoy taking a spoonful/clove of honey garlic daily and when I feel a cold coming on or have been around someone sick. The honey is delicious on its own, and I also love using it in herbal teas or drizzling it over warm oatmeal.
Whenever I feel a scratchy throat or a hint of congestion, this homemade remedy is my first line of defense. I love knowing that I’m relying on nature’s ingredients to support my health, and it’s become an essential part of my fall routine.
Dosage Recommendations
For Adults:
I typically take 1 tablespoon of garlic honey once a day, especially during cold and flu season. If I feel a cold coming on, I might increase this to 2 tablespoons.
2. For Children (Ages 1 and Up):
Recommended Dosage: For children aged 1-5 years, a dose of 1 teaspoon daily is often effective. For children aged 6-12 years, this can be increased to 1-2 teaspoons per day, depending on their needs.
Frequency: It’s best to take garlic honey once daily, but during cold and flu season or if your child is feeling unwell, you can administer the dosage up to twice a day.
Important Considerations
Age Restrictions: Do not give honey to infants under 1 year of age due to the risk of botulism, a rare but serious illness. Honey should only be introduced to children aged 1 and older.
Allergies and Sensitivities: Always check for any allergies to garlic or honey before introducing this remedy. If your child has a history of allergies, it’s best to consult with a pediatrician first.
Health Conditions: If your child has a pre-existing health condition or is taking medication, it’s wise to speak with a healthcare professional before adding garlic honey to their routine.
